The 17th edition of the Standard Chartered Marathon is set to return to its traditional venue, the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday 27th October 2019.
“After a 2 year absence, I am pleased to inform you that we shall be returning to “the home of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon”, Nyayo Stadium. This means we shall also revert to the route used in 2016.” Peter Gitau, Standard Chartered COO and Chairman, Marathon Local Organising Committee
With over 20,000 registered participants, the marathon will feature six race categories; 42km male and female, 21km male and female, 10km male and female, 21km wheelchair male and female, 5km Family Fun Run race and the newly revamped CEO Race. The race will now be known as the Corporate Relay Challenge. This is a team relay, whereby five participants will collectively complete the 42Km Full marathon. The winning team to take home KES 150,000 towards a charity of their choice
And in line with the international safety provisions, the Nairobi Traffic department on Tuesday released an elaborate road closure diversions schedule that will see traffic to and out of the city diverted to alternative roads between 4am and 2pm.
The affected roads include sections of Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, Upper Hill and Forest road while within the CBD, Kenyatta Avenue, Muindi Mbingu and sections of Haile Selasie and University Way will also be closed.
Prize money has been increased from Ksh 1.5 to Ksh 2 million for 42km, and from Ksh 150,000 to Ksh 300,000 for 21km and we have noticed heightened interest from the elite and fun runners,
