Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia will have to dig deeper for a third straight appearance at the group stages of the CAF Confederations following 1-1 draw the DC Motema Pembe in the first leg of their play off at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
Gor’s first attempt on goal came on the third minute when a speedy Lawrence Juma was to shoot off target after some speedy play from the home side. Gor who in the earlier exchanges instigated their attacks from the left-wing plied by Dickson Ambundo was to see the winger miscue his kick in the ninth minute before an attack a minute later being gathered coolly by the Motema keeper.
Pembe was forced into a substitution in the 19th minute when Ngimbi Mapangu picked up what seemed to have been a hamstring injury and was to be withdrawn for Henoc Baka.
The visitors, however, were to restore parity through William Luezi the 71st minute after tucking in a rebound from a free-kick when the entire Gor Mahia defence failed to react. Eight minutes later, Gor woes went from bad to worse when defender Charles Momanyi was sent off for handling a goal-bound effort. The referee pointed to the spot after the Momanyi incident but keeper Mapigano was to save Bongonga Kombe’s effort much to the jubilation of the home fans. Pollack was to throw in Joakim Oluoch after the Momanyi set back and they were able to hold on for a draw heading into the second leg.
